Day 4 - Spokane to Sandpoint, Idaho

We left the hotel and Spokane in rather chilly morning air and wound our way through town. A little confusion on the directions, but no one got lost. Once out of Spokane we were treated to awesome conditions for cycling: pleasant temps, light breezes at our backs most of the time, great road conditions, and good company along the way. Photo to the right was taken over Scott's shoulder on Hwy 2 heading out of Spokane. Dave is with riders from New York, Alaska, and Massachusetts. I think he was telling them about the hills we climb in Nebraska!

The scenery got better and better as we rolled along. Both of us agreed that today was a top ten, if not top five, day on the bike. Not a single pedal stroke in anger. No crashes. Good food. Courteous motorists. Makes me nervous for the coming weeks...

Some great photo opps... including the one to the right of Dave and Ernie climbing. I'm getting good at taking photos while riding... So I decided to take one of myself as well.

We crossed into Idaho just before another excellent lunch.

Along the way we saw osprey nests with wary moms and fuzzy chicks, crossed a two mile bridge, and then enjoyed a coffee at a local coffee shop, where the lady was as nice to us she is to the dogs. Dave said his French Indo-China iced coffee was exceptional and gave the peach from the other day a run for top spot on things he's ingested on the trip. We were also treated to a funny scene, but unfortunately have no pictures... Dogs often run along their property as cyclists go by, but calves apparently do so as well. Two calves a good distance off the road hopped up and ran along glancing over at us until the realized we weren't playing with them. I think they were genuinely disappointed or perhaps happy to have those weird looking animals well away from their pasture.

Hope you're enjoying the photos and updates. We're glad to have rather uneventful days thus far, but I hope that doesn't make for boring updates.

  4. Hi Dave and Scott,
Your pictures and comments are great, you got me hooked. Sat. ride was fast, 19.6 at the bottom of the hill. Doug S. got over heated. It's about 99 degrees at 4.
